How to Measure a Garden for a Bouncy Castle
Measuring your garden correctly is one of the most important steps when hiring a bouncy castle.
Accurate measurements help ensure the inflatable fits safely, can be installed correctly, and provides enough space for children to play comfortably.
This guide explains how to measure your garden properly, what extra space is required, and the common issues that can affect suitability.
Start With the Available Space
Begin by identifying the clear area where the bouncy castle will be placed.
This should be free from obstacles such as trees, sheds, fences, garden furniture, washing lines and low branches.
Measure the length and width of this clear space using a tape measure.
It’s important to measure the usable area, not just the overall garden size.
Allow Extra Clearance Around the Inflatable
Bouncy castles require additional space around them for safe use and access.
As a general rule, you should allow around four feet of extra clearance on all sides of the inflatable.
This extra space is needed for:
- Safe entry and exit
- Anchoring points
- Airflow and movement
- Access for supervision
When checking product sizes in our Bouncy Castles range, always factor this clearance into your measurements.
Check the Height as Well as the Floor Space
Height is often overlooked, especially in gardens with nearby trees, cables or buildings.
Make sure there are no overhanging branches, roof edges or lines above the area where the inflatable will be placed.
This is particularly important for bounce & slide units and taller inflatables from our Bounce & Slide Bouncy Castles selection.
Consider the Surface Type
The surface your garden provides affects how the inflatable can be secured.
Grass is usually ideal, but it should be reasonably flat and firm enough to hold anchoring stakes.
If your garden has paving, concrete or artificial grass, anchoring methods may differ.
Our Bouncy Castle Surfaces - Indoor Halls, Grass, Concrete, Astroturf and More guide explains how different surfaces are handled.
Think About Access to the Garden
Access is just as important as space.
We need a clear route to carry the inflatable from the delivery vehicle to the setup area.
Check:
- Gate widths and doorways
- Narrow paths or steps
- Sharp turns or tight corners
Most inflatables require access through a standard doorway or gate.
If access is restricted, it’s best to discuss this with us before booking.
Allow Space for the Blower
Every bouncy castle uses a blower to keep it inflated.
You’ll need a small clear area at the rear or side of the inflatable for the blower and power cable.
If your garden does not have power within 30 metres, a generator can be added to your hire to keep everything running safely.
Why Measuring Correctly Matters
Incorrect measurements are one of the most common reasons inflatables cannot be set up on arrival.
If the space is too small or unsuitable, we may be unable to proceed for safety reasons.

Indoor Backup Options
If your garden space is limited or weather conditions are uncertain, an indoor venue can be a good alternative.
Community halls and school gyms often provide suitable space for compact inflatables.
Our Indoor Bouncy Castle Hire - What You Need to Know guide covers ceiling height, floor space and access requirements for indoor setups.
